FAYETTEVILLE – During Arkansas’ two-week stay in Europe, one student-athlete will be featured each day in a feature titled #13Days13Razorbacks. Each daily feature will include a player Q&A and be linked to the team’s #EuroHogs page on ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
Day 5 (Saturday, May 24): Junior OPP Liz Fortado
This is the fifth feature in a series titled #13Days13Razorbacks in which one volleyball student-athlete per day will be highlighted during the team’s two-week European tour (May 20-June 1). Visit the #EuroHogs central page for continued coverage of Arkansas’ four-country stay which includes stops in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Today’s feature highlights junior Liz Fortado.
Q: How have you enjoyed the first five days of the trip?
Liz Fortado: It’s been amazing. I’d never been to Milan so that was fascinating to see and walk around the city. I loved Venice. I loved the feeling of getting lost there but I couldn’t stop shopping which is probably a bad thing.
Q: Is Slovenia as you remember it from last year?
Fortado: It’s actually prettier than I remember. I didn’t get to see the city last time and I’m so glad we got to do that (Saturday) because it was breathtaking. I loved it.
Q: How is it different being here with your Arkansas teammates versus last summer with Team USA?
Fortado: I feel like I’m more relaxed with my teammates because we’re so close. When I was here last year, I didn’t know the other girls so I had to try to connect with them as quickly as possible plus learn a new city. I can really just enjoy it this time.
Q: What can a trip like this do for the team heading into next season?
Fortado: This is a big bonding trip for us because we’re so close everywhere we go for two weeks straight. It’s just a good experience to share with one another and grow as a team.
Q: How was the jet lag?
Fortado: The jet lag was terrible. I’ve never been so tired in my entire life. I wasn’t so jet lagged last year but I think it was worse this time because I didn’t go to sleep before we left (Fayetteville). I also couldn’t sleep on the plane which has never happened before. I was so tired I was falling asleep waiting on the curb in Milan. It was rough.
Q: You’ve been to Croatia before so what can the team expect from that country?
Fortado: It’s beautiful and the teams are really good. We played the Slovenian team last year (with Team USA) and their serves are intense so I’m excited to see how we handle that (Sunday). Croatia is another pretty place like (Slovenia) so I’m excited to go to the beach and swim around a little bit.
