He did a little bit of it all for Morrilton High School and Coach Buddy Greeson. He spent time at strong safety, wide receiver, punter, punt returner, kicker and kick returner. In his junior season, he earned 270 yards receiving and racked up 89 tackles and an interception while playing free safety. He helped led his team to the state championship game. As a sophomore, he tallied 38 tackles, three interceptions and a sack. He also played basketball at Morrilton. Scout.com ranked him as the No. 18 weakside linebacker in the country. Hawgs Illustrated tabbed him as the No. 11 prospect in Arkansas. Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 48 outside linebacker in the nation. The outlet also ranked him as the No. 16 prospect in Arkansas and named him a member of the HawgSports.com Natural 21 at No. 14. He chose Arkansas over Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. He is the son of Frederick Sr. and Vanessa Burton.
