This is the first in a series of features on the 2011 University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor inductees. FAYETTEVILLE — Gary Adams starred on defense and special teams for the University of Arkansas’ football teams from 1966-68, helping the Razorbacks to a share of the 1968 Southwest Conference championship. Adams made his impact known by continually making big plays throughout his UA career. A first-team All-Southwest Conference selection in all three of his Razorback seasons, Adams first proved to be a valuable player in the defensive secondary. He snagged 13 interceptions in his career, a then-school record. The career total stands at No. 2 in Razorback history. His 1966 total of seven interceptions led the SWC and is still tied for second on UA’s all-time chart. Two of his interceptions in 1966 came against Texas inside War Memorial Stadium. Adams additionally tied for the team lead in fumble recoveries in 1967 with three. A team captain in 1968, Adams also showed his game-changing abilities as a punt returner. His career average of 10.31 yards per return ranks among Arkansas’ all-time best marks. He led the Razorbacks in punt returns in 1967 and 1968 and scored two touchdowns on punt returns during the 1968 campaign. The Piggott, Ark., native helped Arkansas compile a 22-8-1 record during his time on the UA campus, including a victory over No. 4 Georgia in the 1969 Sugar Bowl. At the conclusion of his Razorback career, Adams represented UA in the 1970 All-American Bowl in Tampa, Fla. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 12th round of the 1969 NFL Draft. Adams was selected to Arkansas’ 1960s All-Decade Team on defense.
