39 Student-Athletes honored by SEC
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas placed 39 student-athletes on the Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll the league office announced recently. Jeff Poppell’s swimming and diving team led the way with nine selections followed by Chris Bucknam and men’s cross country/track and field with seven honorees. There were four student-athletes from baseball and soccer honored and three from football. Softball, gymnastics and women’s tennis had two selections each with one member from men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s golf women’s cross country/track and field and volleyball honored. Four student-athletes went the extra mile earning perfect 4.00 grade point averages for the summer 2008, fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters. Catcher James McCann paced the Razorback baseball team to a third-place finish at the College World Series while maintaining a perfect academic record. Football player Chase Philpot, swimmer Lisa Lukenheimer and gymnast Genny Salvatore also had 4.0s. To be selected, each student-athlete must have a 3.00 GPA or better for the academic year, been on scholarship or be a letterwinner, have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship season.
