5K Scores 16 Lady?Backs Third at SEC Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Lady Razorback track and field finished third in the team race with 88.5 points at the SEC Championships at Auburn University.

On the final day of competition the Lady’Backs earned a silver finish in the 4×400-meter relay and the distance harriers scored 16 points in the 5,000 meters. Katie Stripling in the pole vault was Arkansas’ lone title win.

“Our theme since the first day of competition was to scrap for every point we could get,” head coach Lance Harter said. “Today was a continuation of that same formula. Our kids did a great job of battling back. There were times when we were fifth or sixth in the team race. It came down to the 5,000 meters and the mile relay for us. Those kids did a great job of stepping up.”

Christine Kalmer, Denise Bargiachi, Catherine White and Dacia Barr finished second, fourth, seventh and eighth in the final individual event of the night.

The 4×400-meter relay pushed the Lady’Backs to a bronze finish in the team race with itssilver finish to end the evening. Courtenay Brown, Tominque Boatright, Paige Farrell and Shelise Williams combined for a time of 3:35.40 and All-SEC honors.

Earlier in the day, Barr battled strongly with Tennessee’s Sarah Bowman in the 1,500 meters. She earned a runner-up finish, All-SEC honors and eight points with a time of 4:19.44.

“Sarah Bowman definitely has a great kick,” Barr said. “I was trying to gap her so she wouldn’t be able to come back and get me. For the last 600, I tried to make my big move and tried to break all the other runners off. It started going my way but then they caught back up. I’m happy with the finish.”

Individually, Shelise Williams finished eighth in the 400 meters. She ran a time of 55.49. Makeatha Cooper clocked a 13.88 in the 100-meter hurdle finals, good for an eighth-place finish. Farrell finished seventh in a grueling 800-meter race that saw LSU finish 1-2. She clocked a time of 2:06.54.
