81,671 pounds of food collected

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas Athletic Department collected more than 81,000 pounds of food recently as part of the Fourth Annual Together We Can food drive benefiting area food banks.

The Razorbacks partnered with the Southeastern Conference and its member institutions for a 10-day collection drive across the south.

Arkansas contributed 81,671 pounds of food during the 10-day period. The Razorbacks worked with the Global Ca mpus and were benefited by a food contribution from Tyson Foods as part of the event.

"I’m proud of the work of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and our student-athletes in collecting more than 81,000 pounds of canned goods for those in need as part of the SEC Together We Can program," Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. "By partnering with Global Campus, we were able to expand our efforts and generate more food to help fight hunger in Northwest Arkansas. We appreciate all who contributed to this drive and are especially grateful to our friends at Tyson Foods, Inc., for their substantial support of this important effort."

This year, Arkansas collected more than 2,000 pounds before football game day against Alabama surpassing the total amount of food collected at last year’s event.

In addition, the Razorbacks partnered with area Harps Food stores with collection points and student-athletes were at local stores to promote the event.

With student-athletes and administrators from all 12 SEC institutions participating, the initiative raised more than 240,000 pounds in food and financial contributions, breaking the previous record by almost 100,000 pounds.

For four years, the SEC SAAC has encouraged fans and supporters to spend ten days donating at sporting events, on campus and in the community.All proceeds from the Drive benefit food banks and local charities across the Southeastern Conference’s region. And, after a record-setting year, the league’s overall total now stands at approximately 478,000 pounds.
