Gabriela Lopez had a busy summer of amateur golf before joining the Razorbacks in the fall of 2012. Lopez joined future Razorback teammate Emily Tubert at The Spirit International in November of 2011 in an international event in Texas.
She then joined former Razorback Stacy Lewis at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open in Kohler, Wis. Although she did not make the cut, the experience propelled her on to the 110th North & South Amateur Championship. Lopez posted a 221 playing 15th overall in stroke play before being eliminated in match play.
Prior to Arkansas
Gabriela Lopez checks in from Mexico City, Mexico, where she attended Colegio Sagrado Corazon.
“Gaby is a going to be a great addition to our team in 2012,” Estes-Taylor said. “ She comes from an amazing family and has an energy that is contagious. Gaby was a highly recruited prospect that could have gone anywhere in the country. She is the No. 1 ranked player in Mexico and has had a lot of international tournament success. Mike (Adams, assistant coach) and I were able to watch Gaby play during the 2010 Rolex Tournament of Champions at Blessings Golf Club. Gaby fell in love right away with Fayetteville, our facilities, and our coaching staff. We knew she was the kind of player we needed to get to add to our squad to continue the growth of our program. She is the 2010 Junior World Champion and knows how to win. Gaby has all the tools and I look forward to being able to help her grow her game even further.”
Lopez took up golf when she was four years old and played in the 2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur. She most recently competed in The Spirit International against future Razorback teammate Emily Tubert and is currently ranked 14th by the Golfweek prep rankings.
Lopez was asked about her decision to attend Arkansas in an interview at the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
“It was a tough decision,” she said. “I have many choices. I had many opportunities. There were about 30 schools interested in me. I think the coach has to be very nice with you. I think all the team [has to be right] because you have to play with them four years of my life.”
Maria Gabriela Lopez Butron was born Nov. 9, 1993, and is the daughter of Jose and Gabriela and has younger twin brothers, Jose Luis and Fernando.
