KSU's late goal tops Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas had a huge advantage in shots, but Kennesaw State make the only shot that mattered as the Owls recorded a 1-0 soccer victory at Razorback Field Sunday evening.

An overwhelming majority of the game was spent in KSU's end of the field, but the Razorbacks were not able to convert on 25 shot attempts.

With less than five minutes to play, KSU's Iyani Hughes lofted a floater from 40 yards out. It sailed just under the crossbar and above keeper Kelly Roliard's hands for the only score of the game at 86:47.

"Tonight stings," head coach Colby Hale said. "We felt like we played well enough to win. When you get 25 chances, you have to put more than seven on frame."

Arkansas had a huge advantage in shots, 25-5, and led in shots on goal, 7-2. The Razorbacks also had a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks.

The Razorbacks had several chances to punch one in. At the 60-minute mark, Andrea Carlson took a hard shot at the right post from inside the six, but KSU keeper Melissa Hutto made a diving save to her left. At the 81-minute mark, Allie Chandler hit a hard line drive from 25 yards away, but it bounced off the crossbar.

"Between the 18s (from 18-yard box to the other 18), from both an attacking and defending standpoint, this may have been the best game we've played," Hale said. "When you have 25 shots and 12 corners, you really expect to score some goals."

The Razorbacks dominated the first half, but had nothing to show for it. Arkansas outshot the Owls, 7-2, and had the only shot on goal.

Arkansas had several opportunities to get on the board. Seven minutes in, Ashleigh Ellenwood took a lead pass from Beth Stratton and got a one-on-one with Hutto, but Ellenwood's 15-yarder from the right side at the left post went wide.

Two minutes later, Stratton made a nice steal, but her 40-yarder was right at Hutto for a save.

Fifteen minutes in, Chandler's spinning 30-yarder sailed high.

Carlson led the Razorbacks with three shots on goal. Stratton, Sam Wolf, Blake Pruitt and Jessie Givens had one each.

Roliard had one save while Hutto made six.

The Razorbacks play at home once this week, hosting No. 1 Florida State on Sunday at 7 p.m.
