WEST POINT, Miss. – A pair of Razorback freshmen shoot low leading the No. 23 University of Arkansas women’s golf team to the top of the leaderboard after second round action at the Old Waverly Invitational in West Point, Miss., Tuesday.

Arkansas posted a 291 Tuesday and is in the clubhouse with a 585, one stroke better that first-round leader Tulane with 586 (290-296).  Kentucky is third with 588 (294-294).

Newcomer Regina Plasencia carded a four-under 68 vaulting up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth overall, while teammate Gabriela Lopez counted a 70 and is fourth overall playing as an individual.

“Regina was fantastic today,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “She opened with four birdies in the first five holes and got out to a great start.  I was really proud of her maturity on the golf course today.

“Gabby was solid as well,” Estes-Taylor continued.  “Her goal coming into the week was to win the individual title and she has put herself in contention to do that.  I’m very proud of her as well.”

Junior Emma Lavy continued to play well posting a 71 and is tied for second overall with a 141.  Lavy was steady all day with three bogies and four birdies in the second round.

“Emma is just solid and consistent,” Estes-Taylor said.  “That’s what Emma does.  She birdied a really tough hole in 18 coming in.  She has really bought into everything we are doing and it is nice to see that pay off with her in contention to win a tournament.”

Junior Emily Tubert is tied for 11th overall with a 147 (72-75).  Tubert struggled on 17 and 18 in the second round but had five birdies for the day.

Senior Meagan Roberts and junior Emily Podzielinski are tied for 32nd overall.  Roberts carded a 79 for 154 while Podzielinski matched her first round with back-to-back 77s.

“We are right where we want to be,” Estes-Taylor said.  “We have to focus on one shot at a time.  If we can do that, we will add them all up at the end of the day and see where we are at.”

Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State is fourth with a 598, 13 shots back of the tournament-leading Razorbacks.  The rest of the field includes Cincinnati and Southern Mississippi in a tie for fifth with 607, Kennesaw State with 609, Murray State with 618, South Florida with 621, Memphis with 625 and South Alabama with 641.

Play concludes in the first event of the season Wednesday with a shotgun start.
