WEST POINT, MISS. – The No. 23 University of Arkansas women’s golf team finished third at the Old Waverly Invitational in West Point, Miss., in the first event of the 2012-13 season.

The Razorbacks posted a final round 297 finishing with an 882, just four strokes out of the top spot.

“Winning is a habit and we have to get comfortable with that,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “Today we put ourselves in position to win the tournament, but came up a bit short.  In every defeat is a great lesson and we have to be willing to learn those lessons.”

Junior Emma Lavy led the Razorback team scores in a fifth place finish.  The Fayetteville, Ark., native carded a final round 73 for a 214 (70-71-73).  Lavy’s score is a career low and is the first time in her collegiate career she has had back-to-back rounds under par.

“What can I say about Emma?” Estes-Taylor said. “She just shins out there.  She didn’t quite have her “A” game today but she still did something with it.  She did such a good job of fighting out there today.  She stuck to the game plan and made something happen.”

Freshman Gabriela Lopez was Arkansas’ top finisher in second place.  The Mexico City, Mexico, native competed as an individual for the Razorbacks and did not count in the team score.  Lopez posted three rounds of par or better including the low round of the day, a 68, Wednesday.

Lopez finished with a 210, two strokes out of the lead in her first collegiate event.

Junior Emily Tubert tied for seventh overall with a 219 (72-75-72) after shooting even par on the final day.  Tubert had a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys on the front nine turning even.  She matched that on the back nine and finished with three consecutive par holes.

“Tubert is just solid,” Estes-Taylor said.  “She started rough but to finish with three pars to end is a testament to how she plays the game.”

Freshman Regina Plasencia tied for 18th overall posting a 225 (77-68-80) in her first collegiate event.  Plasencia struggled coming in on the final three holes.  She was three over through 15 but picked up four strokes down the stretch.

“Our freshman are strong and solid and very mature on the golf course,” Estes-Taylor said.  “They are only going to get better.  I was really pleased with their play this week.”

Senior Meagan Roberts tied for 21st overall.  Roberts recorded her best round of the tournament with an even par 72 for 226 (75-79-72).  Roberts’ final round 72 and her 226 for the tournament are both career bests for the Ocean Springs, Miss., native.

Junior Emily Podzielinski rounded out the Razorback scoring.  Podzielinski tied for 38th overall shooting a 246 (77-77-82).

Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky surged from third place to win the tournament with a final round 290 for an 878.  First round leader Tulane was second with 800, followed by Arkansas with 882.  The rest of the field included Mississippi State with 898, Murray State and Southern Miss in a tie for fifth with 912, Kennesaw State in seventh with 915, South Florida in eighth with 917, Cincinnati in ninth with 918, Memphis in 10th with 933 and South Alabama in 11th with 962.

Arkansas returns to the links for the second of three fall events at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 12-14, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
