Daniels Breaks School Record in the 100 Breaststroke
FAYETTEVILLE - Sophomore Nikki Daniels took to the pool against stiff competition in the 100 breaststroke at the Houston Cougar Swimming and Diving Invitational only to record a personal-best time and a school record.
Daniels advanced to the championship final out of a field of 50 other swimmers when she clocked a personal-best time of 1:01.08 in the preliminaries, which is also the third-best time in school history. Daniels would then enter the pool in the evening final and face Texas A&M's Breeja Larson, who was just nine hundredths of a second away from breaking the American record in the 100 breast prelims.
Daniels kept calm throughout the race and tried to keep pace with Larson. After the first turn it was Daniels and Larson in the leading pack and nobody would surpass the two, as Daniels touched second with a school record time of 1:00.12. Daniels swam nearly a whole second faster in the finals to break Leah Pierce's record of 1:00.77, which has reigned supreme since 2009.
