Top-10 triangular meet at Texas A&M

FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 7 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team returns to action Saturday for the Texas A&M Triangular in College Station, Texas. In addition to the Razorbacks, the top-10 tri meet will include No. 4 LSU and sixth-ranked Texas A&M. This weekend’s meet will begin at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center.

“It’s always good to face strong competition and this will be a head-to-head meet,” head coach Lance Harter said. “Our fan base loves a score so we’re going to go in to duke it out with the likes of Texas A&M and LSU. Most people would think that’s a sprint meet but LSU has great balance this year, and so does Texas A&M, so across the board we’re going to see some really good competition.”

Arkansas opened its 2013 campaign Jan. 11 with an 81-61 dual win over Oklahoma State in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks collected nine event wins and were paced by multiple-win efforts from senior Makeba Alcide, senior Gwendolyn Flowers, senior Ivanique Kemp and sophomore Tamara Myers.

In recognition of sweeping the long jump and triple jump, Myers was named the Southeastern Conference Field Athlete of the Week. She posted personal-best marks in both events, including a triple jump of 12.95m/42-6 which is tied for the fourth-best mark in program history. She added a third win as a member of the Razorbacks’ victorious 4x400-meter relay.

Arkansas enters the Texas A&M meet with five top-five national marks through one competition. Myers is ranked second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump (6.10m/20-0.25). The Razorbacks’ remaining top-five performers include senior Gwendolyn Flowers at 300 meters (No. 5, 38.49), junior Keri Wood at 1,000 meters (2:48.35) and junior Sandi Morris in the pole vault (4.25m/13-11.25).

Saturday’s meet will be scored on a 7-5-4-3-2-1 scale in individual events and a 7-5-4 scale in the relay events. Only two individual entries and one relay entry per school will score. Field and running events will begin concurrently. The women’s field events will begin with the pole vault and shot put. The first running event will be the mile.
