FAYETTEVILLE - The No. 56 Arkansas men's tennis team upset No. 37 Minnesota 4-3 in an intense match Sunday afternoon in the Dills Indoor Tennis Facility. The victory over the Golden Gophers improves Arkansas's record to 7-1.
"What a great collegiate tennis match today," head coach Robert Cox said. "I think one of the differences was our home court advantage. We had a great crowd and great atmosphere that kept the guys pumped up and put more pressure on our opponent."
The Razorbacks came out of the gates strong taking two out of the three doubles matches. The No.1 duo for the Hogs of Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott dominated court one taking down the No. 24 doubles team in the country of Rok Bohin and Matheiu Fromont 8-2. Hall Fess and Santiago Munoz clinched the doubles point with an intense 8-6 victory that was won with a Fess ace.
"Doubles proved to be the deciding factor today," Coach Cox said. "We played solid doubles and I was really proud of all of the guys."
Minnesota evened the score one all when No. 63 Leandro Toledo defeated Jeske on court two.
Arkansas responded with a victory from Ward. The senior won in straight sets on court four to give Arkansas the 2-1 lead. The Golden Gophers didn't let down and took the next point in a three-set win over sophomore Jovan Parlic. Parlic captured the first set, but could not hold off Brendan Ruddock in the second and third.
Nott finished, giving Arkansas its third point of the day on court six with a straight set victory over Ruben Weber. Nott is undefeated in singles for his junior campaign with four solid victories.
With Arkansas up 3-2, Lehmann solidified the victory for the Hogs defeating No.49 Rok Bohin in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Munoz was the last Razorback to finish dropping his match in a three-set tie breaker to Fromont.
Arkansas will travel to Eugene, Ore., next weekend to face No.75 Oregon and No.63 New Mexico. There will be a full recap of both matches available at ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
