FAYETTEVILLE - The Sweat Hawg program in which University of Arkansas student-athletes participate in has concluded for 2012 and the top five area elementary schools have been determined in the year-long competition to earn prize money for physical education purposes.
The Sweat Hawg program is a partnership between the Athletic Department and the 12 elementary schools in the Fayetteville and Farmington school districts. Razorback student-athletes work with students in the third, fourth and fifth grades to encourage exercise and promote a healthy lifestyle.
The 12 schools compete for prize money to be used for physical education. The competition is based on an outline of what each school will do with the prize money, designating a Sweat Hawg of the Month for the seven months of the program, an attendance contest at a Razorback women's basketball game and showing Sweat Hawg/Razorback spirit at that game.
The schools are graded in each category. Fifty percent of the grade is based on attendance at the women's basketball game, 20 percent on the outline, 15 percent on selection of a Sweat Hawg of the Month and 15 percent on spirit at the game.
Every student in third, fourth and fifth grade is automatically a Sweat Hawg and receives a t-shirt just for being in the program. The t-shirts are made possible through Arkansas Marketing Specialties and Southwest Diary Farmers.
This year's winning schools and their prizes are Butterfield Elementary, $2,000; Folsom Elementary, $1,500; Williams Elementary, $1,250; Vandergriff Elementary, $750; and Happy Hollow Elementary, $500.
Taj Harrison of the men's tennis team and vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and Lizzy Whitbeck and Molly Milborn of the swimming and diving team will make presentations to the winning schools later this week.
