WEST POINT, Miss. – University of Arkansas junior Emma Lavy guided the No. 23 Razorback women’s golf team to a tie for second place after first round action the Old Waverly Invitational in West Point, Miss., Monday.

Lavy, a Fayetteville, Ark., native fired a two-under 70 in the first round and is second overall, one stroke off the lead.  The Razorbacks are four strokes out of the lead with a first-day 294.

“Emma was so amazing today,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “She played her round with a lot of confidence and got her putts to drop.  It was a great way to start the fall.”

Lavy and the Razorbacks opened on the first tee and the junior birdied four and five to start her round.  She gave a stroke back on nine, turning one under.  Lavy counted her third birdie on the 15 with a four on the par five.

Junior Emily Tubert and freshman Gabriela Lopez are tied for fifth overall with even par 72s. Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native posted a bogey and a birdie on each side in her round.

“Emily was solid,” Estes-Taylor said.  “She hit the ball well and her putts were right on the edge.  If she can get a few to drop, she could go low.”

Lopez, playing as an individual, opened on the 10th hole picking up a birdie on 16 and a bogey on 17 to turn even.  She went bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie on the next four holes before finishing with five consecutive pars for a 72.

Senior Meagan Roberts opened with a first round 75 and is tied for 20th overall.  Roberts turned plus one and finished strong with a birdie on her final hole.

Junior Emily Podzielinski and freshman Regina Plasencia are tied for 34th overall with first-day 77s.  Podzielinski was one under through eight but doubled her ninth hole turning one over.

Plasencia, in her first collegiate event, also turned one over through nine and battled a pair of bogies in her final two holes.

Arkansas is four shots back of Tulane who is in the clubhouse with a 290.  The Razorbacks are tied with Kentucky who also posted a 294.  The rest of the field includes Mississippi State at 297, Murray State with 302, Southern Mississippi and South Florida tied for sixth with 307, Memphis with 308, Kennesaw State and Cincinnati with 309, and South Alabama with 328.

“It was a good start,” Estes-Taylor said.  “We have knocked the competition rust off and we are right where we want to be.”

Play continues through Wednesday in the first event of the 2012-13 season for the Razorbacks.
