Arkansas Game Notes South Carolina – 11/7/09 Team Notes Bobby Petrino coached teams are 41-3 when scoring 30 or more points. Arkansas has started six true freshmen this season, the total ranks second nationally and first in the SEC. Arkansas is +9 in turnover margin this season. Last season the Razorbacks were -9. The Razorbacks had an interception in the game. The Razorbacks have 21 touchdown drives this season under three minutes and 17 under two minutes. Arkansas was 2-2 on red-zone possessions on the day. For the year, the Razorbacks are 30-31 on red-zone scores and have scored a touchdown on 21 of those possessions. D.J. Williams led the Razorback receivers for the first time this season. He had seven receptions for 137 yards. He is one of four Razorbacks to lead Arkansas in receiving this season (Jarius Wright 6-139 vs. Missouri St.; Greg Childs 5-140 vs. Georgia, 5-85 vs. Auburn, 4-135 vs. Florida, 3-83 vs. Ole Miss; Joe Adams 6-81 vs. Alabama, 3-110 vs. Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan, 3-109). The Razorbacks receivers have combined for seven 100-yard receiving games this season and had just five last year. The Razorbacks were 0-1 on fourth down. For the season the Hogs are 7-14. The Razorbacks have outscored their opponents 83-40 in the first quarter this season. Arkansas scored only 55 points in the first quarter last year. Arkansas is now 11-7 against South Carolina all time. John Durmon made his first start as a Razorback at fullback. The Razorback defense held South Carolina to a field goal on its first drive despite the Gamecocks conducting seven plays inside the red zone and six inside the eight-yard line. This is the first time this season that the Razorbacks were tied at the half. The Razorbacks’ 329 passing yards on the day are the most allowed by the South Carolina defense this season. Coming into the game the Gamecocks had allowed a high of 211 passing yards in a game against Florida Atlantic. The Razorbacks recorded their first safety since Sept. 22, 2007, against Kentucky. Individual Notes Ryan Mallett was 23-27 for 329 yards and no touchdown passes on the day. He has 18 touchdown passes in nine games this season. Mallett also rushed for his second touchdown of the season. His .852 completion percentage in the contest is a school record for a game with 20 or more passes attempted. Ryan Mallett’s 18 touchdown passes this season through nine games are as many or more than the Razorbacks threw in 54 entire seasons dating back to the 1947 season. He is eight touchdown passes shy of tying Arkansas’ all-time record for passing touchdowns in a season by a team and nine shy of breaking Clint Stoerner’s school record for passing touchdowns in a season. Mallett has passed for at least one touchdown in eight of nine games as a Razorback and in 10 of his 12 career starts. D.J. Williams’ 69-yard reception at the end of the second quarter is the second longest catch of his career and longest of the season. It was also the longest pass play allowed by South Carolina this year. Williams made a 76-yard reception last season against Louisiana-Monroe. On the day, Williams had seven catches for a career-high 137 yards. It is the fourth 100-yard receiving game of his career. Joe Adams had the first rushing touchdown of his career in the first quarter, an 18-yard run around the right side. Adams also had two receptions keeping his streak of at least one reception in each game of his career ongoing. Alex Tejada converted four extra-point attempts on the day and was 1-1 in field goal chances. On the year, he is now 11-14 on field goal attempts and 37-38 on extra-point opportunities. Tejada now has 120 PATs which is third on Arkansas’ all-time list. He trails Steve Little (121) by one and all-time leader Bill McClard (125) by five. Tejada also had his first two kicks of the season caught for a touchback. Jerell Norton intercepted his first pass of the season in the third quarter in the end zone for a touchback. It is the sixth interception of his career. Dennis Johnson returned four kickoffs for 54 yards and currently ranks second for single season kickoff returns in Arkansas history. His 1,746 total return yards over the last two years ranks second all-time. He is three yards behind Arkansas’ all-time leader, Felix Jones (2005-07), who returned 62 kicks for 1,749 yards. Patrick Jones was credited with his first ½ sack of the season and career. Game Notes Arkansas’ captains were DeMarcus Love, Ryan Mallet, Malcolm Sheppard and Michael Smith. Arkansas is 5-4 in coin tosses this season. The Razorbacks are 2-1 when they lose the toss. Today’s attendance was 68,865, It is the 30th largest in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium history. The Razorbacks honored the 2009 Arkansas baseball team at halftime. The Hogs were the sixth team in school history to advance to the College World Series and finished third in the nation last year. |
