FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas football team is ranked ninth in the first Bowl Championship Series standings of 2011, which were released Sunday.
The Razorbacks' ranking is the program's highest ranking in an initial BCS poll of a season, bettering the ranking of 12th in the initial poll of the 1998 season. UA has been ranked ninth or higher in the BCS poll eight times, including this week.
Arkansas' all-time best ranking of sixth came in week 6 of 2006. The Razorbacks were ranked seventh in week 7 of 2010, week 5 of 2006 and week 3 of 1998, eighth in week 8 of 2010 and ninth in week 7 of 2006 and week 4 of 1998.
Dating back to last season, Arkansas has been ranked in nine consecutive BCS polls, the longest stretch in school history, and in the top 10 in three straight BCS polls.
Arkansas is 5-1, the best start under head coach Bobby Petrino and just the third 5-1 start for UA since joining the SEC. The Razorbacks, who defeated No. 15 Auburn 38-14 on Oct. 8 before a bye, return to action Saturday at Ole Miss in a game that kicks off at 11:21 a.m. on the SEC Network.
