TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
Senior Nikolas Zogaj
earned his second ranked victory of the season Sunday afternoon, but it was the only point the 36th-ranked Razorback men’s tennis team was able to muster in its 6-1 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Zogaj, one week removed from his win over No. 14 Anthony Rossi of Kentucky, followed up with an encore performance as he defeated No. 115 Daniil Proskura, 7-6(4), 6-1, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The win for the senior was not only his second ranked win in three chances, but was his 14th win of the year and seventh win in dual play. Zogaj is now 3-1 in conference play and holds the best record in league play on the team so far.
“This was definitely a learning experience for us and we have to get ready for our non-conference matches next week,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox
said. “We came out a little flat today and you just can’t do that in SEC tennis.”
With the exception of Zogaj, Arkansas could not get anything going in doubles or singles. The Crimson Tide took victories in doubles at courts two and three and then took the momentum into singles as they won two quick matches at courts one and two before Zogaj got the Hogs on the board with his win.
The Razorbacks got some strong performances from sophomores Manfred Jeske
and Mike Nott
, who both took their matches into third sets. Both players lost their first sets, but then came back firing in the second set to extend the match. Jeske actually was taken to a tiebreaker second set by Vikram Reddy, which he ended up winning 7-6(3), but then could only come up with two points in the third-set super tiebreaker to drop the final set, 1-0(8).
For Nott, his match was one of extremes as he lost his first set 6-0 to Michael Thompson, but then won the second set by the same score, 6-0. Unfortunately, his third set would end up much like Jeske’s as he dropped the final set, 6-1.
The 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide drops Arkansas’ record to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in SEC play. Alabama ups its record to 6-7 for the year and is also 1-3 in conference play.
The Razorbacks return home for their next set of matches as they will face Wichita State on Friday, March 16 at 2 p.m. They will then follow up that match with one against Southern Miss on Sunday, March 18 with first serve set for noon.
