FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas men's tennis team closed out its weekend with a 4-0 win over Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. The Razorbacks secured the doubles point for the second time in as many matches and collected three wins during singles play to clinch the non-conference victory. With Sunday's result, Arkansas improves to 12-5 overall while Southern Miss drops to a 7-9 record.
"That was a fun dual match to be part of," head coach Robert Cox said. "That was college tennis at its finest because the level of competition and quality of play was at its highest on each and every court. Southern Miss really came to play today, and like our last match, the scoreboard doesn't say how close this match really was. I'm proud of our guys for the way they competed and played this entire weekend."
With the Razorbacks needing just one team point for the win, freshman Jovan Parlic pulled through in a three-set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) on court five over Jovan Zeljkovic. The win for Parlic was his 10th of the season. Arkansas' first two singles points came from straight-set wins by Gregoire Lehmann on court two and Mike Ward on court four. Lehmann defeated Paulo Alvarado, 6-3, 6-3, and Ward came away with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Juan Escobar.
For the second time this weekend, Arkansas went out to a 1-0 lead with the help of a doubles-point win. The Razorbacks' top duo of Hall Fess and Matt Walters knocked off Escobar and Inaki Belloso, 8-4, and improved to 18-4 this season. Arkansas secured the doubles point when Lehmann and Nikolas Zogaj posted an 8-5 win over Zeljkovic and Paulo Alvarado.
Play was halted when the clinching points were won so four matches went unfinished Sunday. In doubles play, Taj Harrison and Mike Nott held a 6-4 lead over Michael Elortegui and Andrew Goodwin when they were stopped. At the time of Parlic's win, Zogaj on court one, Walters on court three and Victor Hoang on court six were all engaged in a third set.
Due to strong winds in Fayetteville, play was moved indoors for Sunday's dual match. The Razorbacks return to action this Tuesday for a scheduled doubleheader against Lamar and UMKC. First serve is set for 9 a.m. (CT) at Arkansas' home facility. For more information regarding Razorback tennis or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
