FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas senior men’s tennis player Taj Harrison was selected to the 2012 SEC Men’s Tennis Community Service Team the league office announced last week.

Harrison, a native of Kansas City, Kan., is making the team for the second straight year for his services throughout the community in Northwest Arkansas.

Harrison’s main involvement came as the vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which helps create community service activities for students and also allows him to participate in each of those activities that the committee is involved in. He also participated in the Leadership Academy since 2010.

Individually, Harrison was part of the “Together WE CAN” (SEC Canned Food Drive), the Sweat Hawgs program helping to promote physical fitness in local elementary schools, as well as Book Hogs, which promotes the importance of reading to area students. In Book Hogs, Harrison went and read to a class weekly at Leverett Elementary and then was part of the Book Hogs pizza party at the end of the year.

Throughout the school year, Harrison was part of Christmas Shop with the Razorbacks at Toys R Us, Lift Up America (Feeding Hunger in Northwest Arkansas), the Northwest Arkansas Heart Walk at Arvest Ballpark, various kid’s tennis clinics and multiple USTA youth tennis clinics.

Harrison also helped set up the Dwelling Place Church for their Easter program and was part of the clothing donations drive for Tuscaloosa, Ala., which was ravaged by devastating tornados last year. Along with those projects, he was part of the Red Ribbon Rally for Drug and Alcohol Awareness, the Men’s March Against Violence and the D.R. Johnson II Foundation Kid’s Tennis Day.

Along with all of his activities in the community, Harrison also had a solid season on the court for his final year as a Razorback. Harrison amassed eight victories this year with five coming in dual play. Harrison never lost a match in dual play and went 3-0 at the No. 5 spot. He also earned one victory each at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots.

The Razorback men’s tennis team just completed its regular season and conference tournament and now will wait to see if it lands in the NCAA Tournament field as an at-large team. The tournament selections will be made on May 1 after the conclusion of the other conference tournaments.
