EUGENE, Ore. – The 2012 season for Andrew Irwin came to a close Monday evening with pole vault qualifying at the USA Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. Under wet conditions at Hayward Field, the Razorback freshman did not clear the opening height of 5.30m/17-4.5. Irwin was one of six collegiate competitors in the field and one of two freshmen.

In the same event, former Arkansas pole vaulter Jeremy Scott finished third overall to move on to Thursday’s final. Scott passed at the opening height before posting a second-attempt clearance at 5.40m/17-8.5. He was the 2004 SEC outdoor champion and All-American in his one season at Arkansas.

During his freshman season at Arkansas, Irwin was the 2012 NCAA indoor champion, swept the SEC indoor and outdoor titles and broke the American junior record with his clearance of 5.72m/18-9.25 at the outdoor conference meet. In recognition of his accomplishments during the year, Irwin was named the SEC Field Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season, indoor and outdoor SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year and the South Central Region Field Athlete of the Year.

Irwin was one of 13 to exit the competition without a clearance. The top 11, including Scott, will advance to the event final. The pole vault final at the Olympic Trials will be contested Thursday at 7:05 p.m. (CT). With two rest days built into the meet’s calendar, competition resumes Thursday with current and former Razorbacks in opening-round action of the 200 meters, 1,500 meters and 400-meter hurdles.
