FAYETTEVILLE – Competing at the Woodie’s DIY Track and Field Championships of Ireland, David Flynn raced to a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday in Santry, Ireland. Teammate Anthony Lieghio also competed at the Irish Championships in the 800 meters. At the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships, Akheem Gauntlett was sixth at 400 meters.

Adding to his collection of U-20 and U-23 titles in previous years, Flynn ran to a winning time of 9:06.58. With 200 meters remaining in the race, he pulled away from the pack to finish more than three seconds ahead of the nearest runner. Flynn was running in front of a crowd that included former Razorback head coach John McDonnell.

In a race with the top-four spots separated by less than half a second, Lieghio crossed the finish line in a time of 1:52.92 for his fourth-place result. The event winner clocked a time of 1:52.48 Lieghio just completed his junior season at Arkansas where he was an indoor All-America performer as a member of the distance-medley relay.

Representing his native Jamaica at the NACAC meet, Gauntlett posted a time of 46.95 in the final of the 400 meters. He entered the championship race with a qualifying time of 47.23 in the preliminary round. In the 4x100-meter relay, Gauntlett teamed with Paul McPearson, Ramone McKenzie and Akino Ming to help Jamaica to a third-place finish in 39.67.

The summer season for Razorback track and field continues this week with the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona. Gunnar Nixon, the USA junior champion, will compete in the decathlon and signee Jarrion Lawson will take on the long jump and triple jump. Arkansas will also be represented on the sidelines as graduate assistant Aki Tajima will be a member of the Team USA training staff.
