FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team will compete in their fourth and final team event of the fall season this weekend at the Houston Cougar Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the University of Houston, will take place from Nov. 2-4.
Two freshmen will compete for the Razorbacks, Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez
and Kristen Mee
. A total of 14 teams will participate in the tournament, highlighted by Auburn, Rice, TCU, North Texas, and Oregon. The players will compete in flights of eight with each player having one doubles and one singles match daily for each of the three days.
“Ana Lorena and Kristen will go down there,” head coach Michael Hegarty
said. “We will be looking for strong performances from those two players. Both have had good fall seasons so far. I will be looking for them as freshmen to take another step forward. We’ll be looking for real improvement at this stage.”
The Razorbacks are hoping to conclude a strong fall season at the Houston Invitational. The team is coming off a strong performance at the ITA Central Regionals, which saw Yang Pang
reach the quarterfinal round. In wrapping up the fall schedule, Hegarty is looking to develop the squad and prepare for the fall season.
“We’ve played a lot of matches this fall,” Hegarty said. “That’s really what you want, is to get as many matches as you can and log hours. There’s been a lot of development, and that’s where they make the biggest improvements. The end of this tournament season is very important to us.”
Play will start with doubles on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. (CST). Belmar Hernandez / Mee face Houston's Charlotte Phillips and Jo Garvey. In singles, Belmar Hernandez will face Rice's Kimberely Anicete, while Kristen Mee matches up with Oregon's Lena Macomson.
Full recaps and results will be posted online following each day of play.
