FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas freshman Anna Mayfield was named the SEC Freshman of the week for her performance at the Houston Cougar Swimming and Diving Invitational where she placed her name on two school records it was announced Tuesday.
Mayfield’s banner weekend was highlighted by her school-record breaking swim in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.18, which currently ranks fourth nationally. Mayfield made the championship final in the 200 back and placed third overall.
Mayfield teamed up with teammates, Nina Drolc, Maddie Monroe and Susanna White to break the nine-year old Arkansas 400 freestyle relay. The freshman swam the third leg of the race and recorded the second-fastest split of the group with a time of 49.67. The record time of 3:19.56 currently ranks eighth nationally.
In the 800 freestyle relay the Razorbacks looked strong as they recorded the fourth-best time in school history in the relay with a time of 7:17.52, as Mayfield anchored the team with the fastest split of 1:49.32.
Mayfield also had impressive swims in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle as she placed fifth overall in the 500 free out of 72 swimmers. Her preliminary time of 4:45.80 currently ranks 11th in the nation. She also recorded fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.40 in the 200 freestyle, which was good for second-best in school history and 16th nationally.
Mayfield currently leads all Razorbacks this season with the top time in the 200 freestyle and the 200 backstroke,
Mayfield and the 23rd-ranked Razorbacks return to the pool on Jan. 12 as they face Penn State and Missouri State at home in a double-dual meet at 10:00 a.m.
