FAYETTEVILLE – For the second time during the 2013 indoor season, Makeba Alcide has been named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week. The latest recognition comes on the heels of her collegiate-record performance in winning the pentathlon at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships.

During the single-day, five-event competition, Alcide broke the NCAA record in the pentathlon with 4,569 points, surpassing the previous record of 4,555 set in 2012 by Brianne Theisen of Oregon. With Friday’s result, the Castries, St. Lucia, native now owns the No. 1 and 7 spots on the all-time collegiate list.

In addition to the collegiate record, Alcide broke the SEC Championships meet record, lowered her own school record and reset the national record of her native St. Lucia. Within Friday’s competition, she also broke the pentathlon high jump event record with her clearance of 1.87m/6-1.5. Alcide capped her indoor conference career as the two-time SEC champion in the pentathlon. She also won the event in 2012 in Lexington, Ky.

Alcide began the day with a personal-best time of 8.35 in the 60-meter hurdles, scoring 1,050 points in the first event. She followed with 1,067 points from her result in the high jump. Alcide had PRs in the remaining three events with marks of 12.32m/40-5 in the shot put (682 points), 6.15m/20-2.25 in the long jump (896 points) and a time of 2:16.37 at 800 meters (874 points). She needed to run 2:17.30 in the final event to break the record.

The Razorback senior also finished fourth in the high jump competition at the SEC Championships. She had a final clearance of 1.84m/6-05, her fourth six-foot clearance of the season. The Razorback senior entered the year with a personal best of 5-10.5. Alcide scored a total of 15 points during the weekend and helped Arkansas win the program’s fourth SEC team title, and its first since the 2003 season.

Alcide was previously recognized by the USTFCCCA in January for her pentathlon showing at the Razorback Team Invitational where she posted the then-No. 6 all-time collegiate score of 4,464 points. Alcide entered the year with a lifetime best of 4,126 points.

Arkansas will host the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 8-9) at the Randal Tyson Track Center for the 11th time in program history.
