FAYETTEVILLE – On the heels of a 19th Southeastern Conference indoor title, the No. 1 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team has garnered three regional honors Monday from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Razorback head coach Chris Bucknam has been named the South Central Region Coach of the Year, while Travis Geopfer was voted the South Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year and senior Tarik Batchelor was recognized as the South Central Region Field Athlete of the Year.
Under Bucknam’s watch, the Razorbacks won the team title at the SEC Championships with 152.5 points. The win was Bucknam’s fourth SEC indoor title and 10th overall SEC team crown. Arkansas is currently ranked #1 in the NCAA, and has been atop the national poll since the preseason. The team has 17 individuals and two relays ranked in the top 16 of the NCAA descending order list including the national leader at 800 meters (Leoman Momoh) and triple jump (Batchelor).
Geopfert’s athletes scored 57 points at the SEC Championships helping Arkansas win the league title. His athletes have six marks ranked in the top 16 of the NCAA descending order list with Batchelor in the triple jump (first), Anthony May II in the triple jump (No. 11) and high jump (13), Kevin Lazas in the heptathlon (third), Raymond Higgs in the long jump (third) and Jarrion Lawson in the long jump (seventh). Lazas’ 6,042 points in the heptathlon is an Arkansas school record.
Batchelor was the SEC champion in the triple jump. One year removed from a redshirt season with a knee injury, he recorded a personal-best jump of 16.53m/54-2.75 to win conference title. The Kingston, Jamaica, native is ranked No. 1 in the SEC and NCAA in the triple jump and replaced a lifetime best that he set more than two years ago. With his indoor long jump title from 2011, Batchelor is now a two-time SEC champion and the eighth jumper in program history to win the SEC triple jump title, and first to do so since the 2008 season.
Arkansas will host the NCAA Indoor Championships this Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center for the 11th time in program history.
