Razorbacks earn two shutouts of Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team picked up two wins to open up a road trip, defeating Jackson State Wednesday 4-0 and 5-0. The Razorbacks improved their record to 8-10 (1-5 SEC) with the victories.

Arkansas opened up the first match by clinching the doubles point, winning all three matches. The duo of Kimberley – Ann Surin and Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez won 8-4, while Brittany Huxley and Sarah McLean, as well as Flavia Araujo and Segou Jonker each earned 8-1 victories.

In singles, the Razorbacks clinched the victory by cruising to wins at No. 4, 5 and 6. Freshman Segou Jonker won her second ever collegiate singles match 6-1, 6-1. Flavia Araujo earned a shutout at No. 6, winning 6-0, 6-0, and Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Sarah McLean, Surin, and Huxley were all leading in their matches, which went unfinished with the Arkansas victory.

In the second match, Arkansas again opened with by clinching the doubles. The duos of Surin/Belmar and Huxley/McLean again won by the same scores, winning 8-4, 8-1 respectively.

In singles, Huxley, Belmar Hernandez, Jonker, and Araujo all dispatched of their opponents in straight sets. Jonker and Araujo each earned 6-1, 6-0 victories. Huxley won 6-1, 6-1, and Belmar Hernandez won 6-2, 6-0.

"We are definitely happy to bounce back well today,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “We got some solid point play in today in preparation for our next conference match this Friday."

The Razorbacks will continue their road trip this weekend. Arkansas is at Mississippi State on Friday and at Ole Miss on Sunday.
