FAYETTEVILLE – On the final day of competition at the John McDonnell Combined Events, senior Matt Kirbos finished as the Razorbacks’ top performer in the decathlon with a personal-best score. The Arkansas senior posted a score of 6,935 points to finish in fourth place overall. Former Razorback All-American Terry Prentice won the two-day, 10-event competition with a lifetime-best score of 7,813 points.

Kirbos began day two with an all-conditions personal best in the 110-meter hurdles. The Razorback senior crossed the finish line in a wind-aided time of 15.22 to add 823 points to his overall total. He also posted lifetime-best marks in the discus and javelin with throws of 37.90m/124-4 and 48.10m/157-10, respectively. Kirbos’ score is his first over the 6,900-point mark, besting his previous best of 6,887 points scored at the 2011 SEC Championships in Athens, Ga.

Competing unattached, Prentice led from event one—the 100 meters on Sunday—and never relinquished the top spot. Entering this week’s competition, he owned a personal best in the decathlon of 7,585 points which he scored last year as an Arkansas senior at the SEC Championships in Baton Rouge, La.

Nathanael Franks finished Monday’s events with a trio of top-three finishes, including a win in the discus. He had a day’s best mark of 44.45m/145-10 in the event. Franks closed out the day with a third-place finish in the javelin at 51.83m/170-0 and second-place run at 1,500 meters in 4:38.59. His wind-aided time of 15.42 in the 110-meter hurdles was an all-conditions best.

Arkansas also picked up four top-three event finishes from freshman Julius Sommer on Monday. He was the second-place performer in the discus and javelin with marks of 43.77m/143-7 and 54.59m/179-1, respectively. Sommer also had third-place results in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault during day two of the meet.

The Razorbacks will return to their home track next weekend for the John McDonnell Invitational, a scored event on Saturday. Field events are slated for a 9 a.m. (CT) start with running events beginning at 5 p.m. In addition to Arkansas, the meet is also scheduled to feature Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Tulsa.
