FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas women’s tennis player Brittany Huxley
, a freshman from Grafton, Australia, was named SEC Freshman of the Week in recognition of her play last weekend in the final week of the regular season.
Huxley has had a breakout freshman season for the Razorbacks, and continued her strong play in leading Arkansas to a 6-1 defeat of LSU and a 4-2 win over Houston. Against regional rival LSU, Huxley earned a straight sets win over Ebie Wilson, 6-2, 6-2, with her win clinching the victory for the Razorbacks. She was also instrumental in Arkansas earning the doubles point. Moving up to No. 1 doubles for the first time in her career, Huxley and partner Yang Pang
cruised to an 8-1 victory that ensured the doubles point for Arkansas. Huxley finished the season with a win in straight sets over Houston’s Charlotte Phillips, winning 6-2, 7-5.
“Brittany is very deserving of this honor,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty
said. “She has shown steady improvement in her freshman year, and her play has been critical on both the singles and doubles courts. I expect Brittany will win more conference awards in the future."
Huxley finished the season strong, winning six of her last eight singles matches and three of her last four doubles matches. She finishes her first collegiate season with an 11-10 singles mark and a 10-8 record in doubles. She is the second Razorback to be recognized for a weekly honor this season, with Yang Pang
winning freshman of the week on March 6, 2013.
Arkansas heads to Starkville, Miss. this week for the 2013 SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament, hosted by Mississippi State. Arkansas is the No. 10 seed in the tournament, and will face No. 7 seed Auburn at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
