Oxford, Miss. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team dropped a very long and intense opening round match to Alabama, 4-2, at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.

I am really proud of our guys,” head coach Robert Cox said “It was a well played match by both teams, Alabama just came out on top today.”

Arkansas, Alabama doubles play opened the SEC Tournament in exciting fashion with the doubles point being decided on court one in a tiebreak.

Hall Fess and Santiago Munoz recorded a win for the Razorbacks taking down Stuart Kenyon and Phil Tsanggrides on court three. No. 24 doubles team of Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott played a solid match against Jarryd Botha and David Vierya but, just could not hold on in the tie break, dropping their match 9-8.

Jovan Parlic scored the first point and tied the match at one all for the Razorbacks destroying David Vierya on court five 6-2, 6-2. The Crimson Tide responded with a win on court six taking a 2-1 lead.

Nott answered for the Razorbacks taking a two-set match from Daniil Proskura on court two. Nott took the match 7-6, 6-1 tying the match up for the second time at two all.

Senior Gregoire Lehmann played a hard fought match on court one, dropping the first set in a close tiebreaker. Lehmann’s loss gave Alabama a 3-2 lead in the match.

It all came down to courts three and four with Munoz and Mike Ward playing for the Hogs. Munoz won his first set with ease, but dropped the second to force a third. Munoz fought hard, but could not hold on dropping the third set 6-3.

Mike Ward’s match was suspended due to the clinch-clinch rule that applies in the SEC Tournament.
