FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas freshman Yang Pang was named Central Region Rookie of the Year, it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In receiving the award, she becomes one of 12 finalists for national rookie of the year.

"Pang is a very deserving winner of this award," Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. "She certainly is also a strong candidate for the national award. Many of the past winners of this award have gone on to amazing careers in this always tough Central Region so this is a great springboard for her moving forward."

Pang was recently selected as an at-large participant for the NCAA Individual Singles Championships. She will begin play at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. beginning on May 22, with brackets to be announced on May 20.

Pang is ranked 47th in the nation in singles by the ITA, and has spent the entire season facing ranked opponents for Arkansas at the No. 1 singles spot. She was named to the All-SEC First Team and the All-SEC Freshman Team. Pang finished with an 11-12 record in singles, defeating seven ranked opponents, with all of her loses came to ranked players as well. She was especially strong during the conference season in singles, finishing with a 7-6 SEC record. Her top victory came in conference play, with a win over No. 20 Mary Anne MacFarlane of Alabama.

Pang also was a solid doubles player, compiling a 10-9 record while paired with fellow freshman Brittany Huxley. The pair recorded the most doubles victories on the Razorback squad.

Pang is the second Razorback to ever receive the honor, following Kelsey Sundaram, who was Central Region Rookie of the Year in 2010. The Central Region encompasses a total of 26 collegiate teams.
