NCAA Singles Bracket

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas freshman Yang Pang will begin play on Wednesday at the NCAA Individual Singles competition, held at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. Pang was selected as an at-large participant for the 64-person field.

"This has been a special performance from her all season," Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. "For her to have competed at a high level all year and receive an invitation to the field of the best 64 players in the nation is an honor."

Pang is ranked 47th in the nation in singles by the ITA, and has spent the entire season facing ranked opponents for Arkansas at the No. 1 singles spot during a breakout freshman season. She was named to the All-SEC First Team, the All-SEC Freshman Team, and named Central Region Rookie of the Year by the ITA. She was one of just two players to both the All-SEC First Team and All-Freshman team. Pang finished with an 11-12 record in singles, defeating seven ranked opponents, with all of her loses came to ranked players as well. Pang was especially strong during the conference season in singles, finishing with a 7-6 SEC record.

"There are very few freshmen in this draw," Hegarty said. "Those few will draw great attention and I am confident Pang is not satisfied with simply being there. She is definitely there to win."

Pang's first round match will be at 5:30 pm against Nicole Gibbs from Stanford. A junior, Gibbs was 16-4 for Stanford at No. 1 singles, with a 10-4 record against ranked opponents. Ranked as one of the top 16 seeds in the field, Gibbs is No. 13 in the ITA rankings, and is the defending NCAA singles and doubles champion and 2012 ITA Player of the Year.

This is the fifth time in the past six years that Arkansas has sent at least one player to compete in the individual singles tournament. The last Razorback to compete at the NCAA Individual Singles tournament was Anouk Tigu, who advanced to the second round in 2011 after also reaching the second round in 2010.

The NCAA Individual Singles Competition takes place beginning Wednesday after the conclusion of the NCAA Team tournament. No. 3 seed Texas A&M will face No. 12 Stanford for the NCAA team championship on Tuesday night.
