– Soon-to-be Razorback softball freshman Sydney Wright has been named the 2013 Gatorade Florida Softball Player of the Year as announced Thursday by Gatorade in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports. Wright, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., is part of the 2013-14 recruiting class brought in by University of Arkansas head coach Mike Larabee
Wright was a right-handed pitching standout for Bishop Snyder High School where she accumulated a 27-5 record and a 0.51 ERA in the circle. In 220.2 innings pitched, she totaled 288 strikeouts and just 47 walks, along with 18 shutouts and three no-hitters. Wright was just as dominate at the plate where she posted a .443 batting average, 10 home runs, 46 RBI and a .821 slugging percentage during her senior campaign.
Between Wright and 2012-13 transfer Kasey Fagan
, the Razorback softball team will have two Gatorade Florida Softball Player of the Year winners on its 2013-14 roster. Fagan was a two-time recipient (2009, 2010) of the prestigious award during her prep career at Dunnellon High School and was the 2009-10 Gatorade National Player of the Year. Overall, the team will now have three Gatorade honorees as soon-to-be junior Kimmy Beasley
was recognized for the state of Arkansas in 2011.
This latest award adds to the list of accolades for the Razorbacks’ incoming class. Last month, incoming freshman Rachel Box was named the 2012-13 Outstanding Player of the Year for the state of Arkansas by the Democrat-Gazette. Box tallied a .494 batting average, 11 home runs, 28 RBI and a .550 on-base percentage during her senior season at White Hall High School.
Wright is part of the Razorbacks’ incoming class that also includes Box, Kelsey Berlin, Jessica Harrison, Shelby Hiers, Loren Krzysko, Grace Moll and Parker Pocklington. Box and Krzysko will enter Arkansas as preferred walk-on additions to the program. The Razorbacks just completed their 2013 season with 36-20 record an appearance in the Norman Regional final of the NCAA Tournament.
