LAKE FOREST, Ill. –
Despite top 10 finishes from both senior Sebastian Cappelen and junior Thomas Sorensen, the No. 7 Arkansas men’s golf team couldn’t climb the leaderboard on Monday in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic held at The Knollwood Club, finishing in a tie for seventh place in the 16-team field.
Cappelen and Sorenson shared the honor as the team’s low-man on the day with one-over par 73s to highlight a four-man score of 298. The Razorbacks shot a 299 in Sunday’s first round, but responded with the second-best round of the tournament in the afternoon with a four-under 284. Arkansas’ three-round score of 881 was six strokes back of the top five.
Host Northwestern erased a three-stroke deficit on the final day, using an even-par 288 to move past No. 22 Kent State for the team title. Michigan moved up three spots to occupy third place, while Ohio State and Purdue tied for fourth.
Entering the day tied for second overall in the 87-player field, Cappelen was vying for his fourth career win, but settled for his 12th career top five. Cappelen played the first 53 holes of the tournament at even-par or lower during each round before capping his 38th career start with a one-over 73 on Monday. A preseason Top 50 Player to Watch by Golf Digest, Cappelen’s three-round 69(-3)-71(-1)-73/213(-3) marked the 11th tournament in his career that he’s finished under-par and the 14th time he’s been the team’s low-man at an event. He also led the field in par 4 scoring (-3) while totaling 42 pars and eight birdies over the three rounds.
Coming off a bogey-free 69 in Sunday’s second round, Sorensen’s streak without a bogey reached 21 holes as he finished the tournament in a three-way tie for eighth place, good for his fourth career top 10. One of just eight players in the field to shoot under-par on the course’s par 3s, Sorenson’s two-day score of two-under 214 (72-69-73) was just four off his career best.
Senior Blake Biddle turned Arkansas’ third counting score with a 75, while sophomore Taylor Moore and redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford each carded 77s. Moore, who led the Razorbacks with 12 birdies over the three rounds, was the top finisher out of the trio in a tie for 57th position.
The Razorbacks will have two weeks off from tournament action until they travel to the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate hosted by Alabama at Old Overton Club on Oct. 7-8.
