After a two-week hiatus, the No. 12 University of Arkansas men’s golf team will return to the course on Monday when it opens play at the competitive Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate hosted by Alabama at Old Overton Club.
Half of the 12-team field is ranked in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll with two others receiving votes. The two-day event will begin with 36 holes on Monday, as the 60-player field will take on a par 70, 7204-yard layout. Arkansas will use its third different lineup in three events, as senior Sebastian Cappelen, junior Thomas Sorensen, sophomores Taylor Moore and Nicolas Echavarria, and redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford will represent the Razorbacks. Cappelen, Moore and Crawford have played in every event so far this season.
The Danish duo of Cappelen and Sorensen led Arkansas in its last outing at the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern by both finishing in the top 10. One of Golf World’s Top 50 Players to Watch in the preseason, Cappelen holds a 71.8 stroke average through the opening two tournaments. He has finished under par in half (3) of the rounds played (6), while turning in a counting score each round to bring his career total to 102.
The Windon Memorial Classic was Sorensen’s season debut, as he opened his junior campaign with a three-round two-under par 214 to tie for eighth place. The top 10 finish was the fourth of Sorensen’s career. Moore will occupy the No. 3 position in the lineup, carrying a 73.3 stroke average. The Edmond, Okla. product was the team’s low-man at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitation to open the year with a fifth place showing and he leads the team with 20 birdies through six rounds.
An honorable mention All-American as a freshman, Echavarria returns to the lineup after playing in the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invite. Crawford has been a staple in the lineup so far this season after redshirting in 2012-13, posting a 75.5 stroke average. Crawford has turned in a counting score in four of six rounds.
Alabama has hosted the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate since 1986, holding the event at the Old Overton Club since 1997. Past individual champions include Tiger Woods (1994), Rory Sabbatini (1997), Hunter Mahan (2001) and Bill Haas (2002).
