VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Highlighted by junior Thomas Sorensen’s tie for fourth place overall, the No. 12 University of Arkansas men’s golf team concluded play at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate hosted by Alabama at Old Overton Club in sixth place out of a field of 12 teams on Tuesday.

Taking on a field that features six ranked teams and two others receiving votes in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll, the Razorbacks posted a team score of 284 in the final round, finishing just one stroke out of the top five with a two-day total of 295-279(-1)-284/858.

Sorensen entered the tournament with momentum from a top 10 finish at the Windon Memorial Classic and continued his torrid start to the season with his third career top five. A native of Denmark, Sorensen entered the day in a tie for eighth place but moved up the leaderboard with a final round one-under 69. Sorensen made his move six holes into round two where he played a stretch of 21 holes lasting until the turn in round three, at five-under par. The score of 72-68(-2)-69(-1)/209(-1) is a career-low for Sorensen, who has shot par or lower in four of six rounds this season.

No. 1 Alabama took home the team title, conquering its home course with a three-round score of 11-under 829, good for a 16-stroke buffer from second place No. 16 Texas A&M (845). UAB (846) moved into third place, while No. 3 Texas (852) and No. 20 Auburn (857) rounded out the top five.

Senior Sebastian Cappelen made 12 straight pars to finish off his 54-holes with a three-over par 73 to tie for 16th place on the 60-player leaderboard. The only player to turn in a counting score in all of Arkansas’ nine rounds this season, Cappelen has now finished in the top 20 in seven straight events dating back to last year. His three-round 73-68-73/214 featured 36 pars and seven birdies.

Redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford and sophomore Taylor Moore turned in their best scores, each carding a one-over 71 to contribute to the team score of 284, which ties for the second-best single round score of the year. After closing Monday’s afternoon round with no bogeys over the final 11 holes, Crawford stretched the streak to 17 holes en route to following his 76-72 first day with his 71 that put him in a tie for 33rd position. Like Crawford, Moore was solid over the final two rounds, shooting 73 in Monday’s second round followed by Tuesday’s 71. Moore tied for 42nd with a three-round score of 221. Sophomore Nicolas Echavarria had a pair of counting scores Monday, finishing the tournament in a tie for 39th place. Echavarria made 35 pars over the two days to shoot 74-71-76/221.

The Razorbacks will be back in action in less than a week when they travel to Carmel, Ind., for the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana on Oct. 14-15. Held at Crooked Stick Golf Club, the event will commence with 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 14, with a shotgun start slated for 8:45 a.m.
