FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas junior punter Sam Irwin-Hill has been named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, as announced on Friday by the Augusta Sports Council.
A native of Bendingo, Australia, Irwin-Hill has averaged 43.8 yards a punt this season, ranking seventh in the SEC and 22nd nationally in punting average. Irwin-Hill has placed 12 punts inside the 20-yard line, which is the second-highest total in the SEC this season. Irwin-Hill was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance vs. No. 14 South Carolina, which included a 79-yard punt, which is tied for the seventh-longest punt in school history, the longest punt in the SEC this season and tied for the second-longest punt nationally in 2013. Irwin-Hill averaged 53.5 yards per punt vs. the Gamecocks.
Irwin-Hill is among 85 punters named to the watch list, which will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists on November 8. Following the semi-finalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be identified on November 25. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.
The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, December 12 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN. The show, hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will feature live presentation of nine player awards, along with the recipients of Disney’s Spirit Award, The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the NCFAA (National College Football Awards Association) Contributions to College Football Award, and student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team.
Irwin-Hill and the Razorbacks return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 vs. Auburn. Kickoff for the Auburn game is scheduled for either 5 p.m. on ESPN2 or 6 p.m. on ESPN. The Auburn game is the final on-campus contest for the Razorbacks this season and will also serve as Senior Day. The program’s seniors will be recognized in a special ceremony prior to kickoff. Arkansas has won two straight in the series and four of the last five.
