Van Horn Provides Offseason Update

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas baseball head coach Dave Van Horn recently visited with RazorVision to provide an offseason update.

With the season a little more than two months away, Coach Van Horn detailed what the team is working on in the month of December.

“We’ve been working on getting bigger and stronger in the offseason,” Coach Van Horn said. “Doing a lot of long toss and bullpen work with our pitchers. Offensively, we’re still swinging the bat and doing some defensive work. For the most part, just trying to make sure that we’re ready to roll come January.”

The Razorbacks return just six pitchers from last year’s pitching squad, which compiled a school record 1.89 team ERA, the lowest team ERA in the NCAA since Connecticut had a 1.71 team ERA in 1976. Despite the youth of this year’s pitching staff, Coach Van Horn is pleased with the leadership the group has displayed.

“The young guys that are returning, they’re doing a good job of taking a leadership role,” Coach Van Horn said. “The freshmen that we have in here have good arms, they just don’t have experience. You can expect to see us use a lot of guys in a lot of different roles early and trying to get guys experience to get them ready for league play.”

Arkansas will start preseason practice on Jan. 24. The Razorbacks open the 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 14, at 3:05 p.m. against Appalachian State. The season opener vs. Appalachian State is one of 35 home games at Baum Stadium during the 2014 season.
