FAYETTEVILLE -- Head coach Tom Collen met with members of the media on Tuesday, as the University of Arkansas women's basketball team (13-0) prepares to open SEC play by hosting South Carolina at Bud Walton Arena on Thursday.
Having gone unbeaten in non-conference play and built momentum heading into the conference schedule, Collen said the Razorbacks are ready for the next challenge awaiting them this season.
"The team is in great spirit right now and is excited to play against the best of the best," Collen said. "You can't do any better than 13-0 in the nonconference and you couldn't have really played a whole lot better than we played. Now, it's a matter of stepping up and preparing to play against great teams night in and night out."
With Arkansas holding the nation's leading scoring defense (44.6) and South Carolina ranked No. 3 (48.3), points will likely be at a premium with such defenses pitted against one another on Thursday inside Bud Walton.
"Traditionally, these games with South Carolina are in the mid-40s for scoring," Collen said. "It's pretty hard to score against good defensive teams. I think you're going to see a real defensive struggle and two teams that scout each other very well."
With seven freshmen on the roster this season, Collen said getting into league play and gaining experience will be crucial moving forward for this group of Razorbacks.
"This is one of the more talented teams that we've had," Collen said. "We're certainly a young team and we certainly need to get some more experience. We want it to show up right away though. On Thursday night, we want to show people that our 13-0 record isn't a fluke."
