FAYETTEVILLE -- It was early deja vu inside the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center as Kimberley - Ann Surin and Brittany Huxley led the day with a doubles upset victory, but the No. 44 University of Arkansas women's tennis team (5-4, 0-0 SEC) could not withstand a rally from No. 30 Purdue (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) and was defeated in a 5-2 loss Sunday.

After Surin and Huxley upset the ITA National Rankings No. 51 doubles pairing of Mara Schmidt and Krizstina Kapitany, the Razorbacks went on to win the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead in the dual match. The Boilermakers countered and went on to win five-of-six singles matches, however, which sealed the 5-2 defeat of the Razorbacks.

"Both teams put together an excellent college tennis match out there today," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "By winning the doubles point plus four first sets we put ourselves in position to come out winners. But, full credit to Purdue and their staff as they found the ways back to the victory."

Surin and Huxley earned their second doubles victory of the weekend and second upset of a nationally-ranked pairing, as each improved to 4-2 individually in doubles play. The sophomore duo also improved to 2-1 this season against ranked opponents, having defeated No. 31 Whitney Richie and Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma on Friday.

Yang Pang was the lone victor in singles for Arkansas at the No. 1 spot, defeating Schmidt to improve to 4-5 this season. The sophomore from Nanjing, China, fell behind early by dropping the first set 2-6, but rallied and lost just four of the final 12 games to complete the 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback.

Purdue held a 3-2 lead over Arkansas, as the dual match came down to the deciding No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Shannon Hudson took Daniela Vidal to a back-and-forth third set, but ultimately fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Surin showed signs of her own rally, but was unable to complete the comeback bid and was defeated 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 by Nicole Robinson.

Wrapping up the non-conference portion of its schedule, the Razorbacks shift their focus to the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas opens conference play with back-to-back road trips, beginning Feb. 28 at No. 15 Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., and then followed by a journey to Lexington, Ky., to face No. 38 Kentucky.

Arkansas has faced current, nationally-ranked opponents in eight of its first nine dual matches so far this season. The Razorbacks earned ranked wins over No. 55 Kansas State and No. 63 North Texas, plus a pair of victories in a doubleheader sweep of current No. 62 Wichita State. The Shockers were unranked when facing Arkansas in the Razorbacks' season opener.
