HUMBLE, Texas – Highlighted by five straight birdies during his final nine holes, sophomore Nicolas Echavarria carded a three-under 69 to help put the No. 19 Arkansas men’s golf team in sole possession of third place in the 15-team field at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships on Friday held at The Golf Club of Houston.

Coming off a team win at the Gator Invitational, the Razorbacks posted a four-man score of one-under 279 to sit seven strokes back of host and No. 15 Houston (280) and two behind No. 21 Texas (285). The trio of teams will play together during Saturday’s second round, going off the first tee from 10:30-11:06 a.m. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com or www.ArkansasRazorbacks.com, while in-round Twitter updates can be found by following @RazorbackMGolf.

Echavarria’s season-low 69 was the third-best score turned in by the field, becoming the fifth different Razorback to finish as the team’s low-man this spring. Sitting at two-over with six holes to play, Echavarria tore up the course’s front nine – his final nine after starting on No. 10 – with five straight birdies on holes 4-8 en route to a 31 on the side. He finished third amongst the field with six birdies, including two on the four par 3s.

Arkansas finished its opening nine holes at two-over, but was able to climb to under-par behind Echavarria’s hot finish, sophomore Taylor Moore’s one-under bogey-free 35 on the back and an eagle on the par 5, 8th hole by redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford.

The eagle is the second of the spring for Crawford, as he worked his way out of being two-over to finishing with an even-par 72. Moore also supplied an even-par 72, as the duo is part of a log jam in a tie for 23rd place. The reigning SEC Golfer of the Week, Taylor’s 72 featured a tournament first day-best 16 pars and was his third straight par or lower round after a fourth place showing at the Gator Invitational.

Arkansas’ final three scores were all 74s by senior Sebastian Cappelen, redshirt senior William Meason and junior Thomas Sorensen, who is playing as an individual. Cappelen’s 43rd career event started with his 367th career birdie, but the two-time All-American shot a two-over 38 over his first nine before finishing with a 36.
