No. 14 Gymbacks Upset No. 9 Nebraska In Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 14 University of Arkansas gymnastics team completed the upset victory over No. 9 Nebraska 196.700 – 196.350 as they posted their best road score of the season. This is the first time the Razorbacks upset a top-10 opponent since 2011, when the Razorbacks topped No. 1 Florida in Barnhill Arena.

Senior All-American Katherine Grable tied for her eight all-around title of the season with Nebraska senior Emily Wong with a 39.625 to improve Grable’s season-best road score she set last week at Georgia. Grable started off the meet with a 9.85 on the bars and then followed with three-straight scores of 9.925. She also won her eight floor title of the season and third title on the beam. Grable came into the meet ranked No. 3 in the nation and Wong was ranked No. 4.

Freshman Amanda Wellick entered the meet as the top-ranked freshman in the land, which put her at No. 19 in the rankings to finish second in the all-around competition with her fifth score of 39.30 or better at 39.350. The score upset the No. 14 gymnast in the country in Nebraska’s Jessie DeZiel, who posted a 39.150. Wellick matched her career-best mark on the beam of 9.875 to help the Razorback’s tenth-ranked beam rotation solidify the upset victory.

The Razorbacks started off the meet with two rotations of 49.0 plus with a 49.050 to start on bars and a 49.200 on the vault to total a 98.25 at the halfway point of the meet. The Razorbacks swung together four bar routines of 9.8 plus including a 9.85 from Grable and a 9.825 from sophomore Keara Glover. The Razorbacks woul also get the first 9.8 routine of freshman Paris Ryder’s career with a 9.825 on the vault as well as a 9.825 from senior Scarlett Williams. Grable finished the vault rotation with her first score of 9.925 of the night.

At the halfway point of the meet, Arkansas trailed Nebraska 98.525 – 98.250, but the Razorbacks were not phased. Arkansas continued posting scores of 49 – plus with a 49.250 on the floor which was the second-best rotation score of the season to give the Razorbacks a one-tenth lead heading into the final event.

The Razorbacks finished the meet in style posting a 49.200 on the beam, a mark that ties for the second-best score of the season. Both freshmen Samantha Nelson and Wellick tied their career-best marks in the rotation of 9.825 and 9.875, respectively. Sophomore Sydnie Dillard also added a 9.875 to the rotation and Grable finished the meet for the Razorbacks with her third 9.925 of the meet to claim the event title.
