BIRMINGHAM Ala. - Freshman Amanda Wellick has been named the 2014 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Year in a vote by the league's coaches.

Wellick started out the season by scoring the first of her five scores this season of 39.30 or better with a 39.30 in her first collegiate meet. Wellick also won the first event title of her career on the bars in the Razorbacks first meet of the season. Wellick is currently the No. 18 gymnast in the country and has been the top-freshman in the season for the vast majority of the season. Wellick has set her season-best marks so far in the all-around of 39.450 which is the highest mark scored in the country by a freshman, 9.90 on the vault and floor and 9.875 on the bars and beam.

“Having Amanda win the SEC Freshman of the Year is a huge accomplishment for our program,” co-head coach Rene Lyst said. “Amanda has been a huge part of our success this year after coming in and competing in the all-around in all of our meets this season.”

Wellick has competed in every single meet this season in the all-around competition for the Razorbacks. She has only not been featured in the scoring lineup after just two routines this season.

Amanda Wellick is the first SEC Freshman of the Year that we have ever had in our program and that is quite an honor in itself,” co-head coach Mark Cook said. “Amanda is a really mature athlete and she has competed in all of our competitions this season. She has been ranked as the top-freshman in the country for most of the season and again I am really glad that the other coaches in our league have recognized her.”

Previously, the Razorbacks have earned two conference gymnast of the year honors. Michelle Stout was named the 2011 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2012, Jaime Pisani was named the SEC Gymnast of the Year.

Wellick and the Razorbacks will compete in the 2014 SEC Gymnastics Championship on Saturday, March 22, at 2 p.m., in Birmingham, Ala.
