JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Arkansas softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday at Jackson, winning game one by a score of 7-4 before dropping the second, 3-1. With their latest results, the Razorbacks are now 23-11 overall. Tuesday’s doubleheader marked the end of a six-game, week-long road trip that took the team through Central Arkansas and the state of Mississippi. The Razorbacks will return to Fayetteville for the start of a four-game home stand, beginning Friday with the start of a weekend series against Texas A&M.

Having been silenced for the first four innings of game one, the Razorback offense used four hits and three walks to score five runs to take the lead on the scoreboard. Claire Clark started the rally with a one-out double, and following a Devon Wallace walk, Stephanie Canfield drove in the first run with a single up the middle. After a pair of bases-loaded walks to plate two more runs, Jayme Gee hit her second double of the game to drive in the final two runs of the inning.

Jackson State (13-23) opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first but trailed after the Razorbacks’ outburst in the fifth. The home team cut its deficit to one following a two-run shot by Chelsea Smith in the bottom of the sixth. Arkansas responded with two runs of its own in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Wallace knocked a two-run single up the middle to cushion the lead for Young.

In her longest outing of the season, Kelly Young pitched seven innings in relief of Kasey Fagan who allowed the first two runs of the game. Young finished the game with a season-high eight strikeouts. The Madison, Miss., native had a previous best of five strikeouts which she reached twice prior to Tuesday’s game. Young had a previous long appearance of 6.2 innings at FGCU.

Like they did in the opener, the Lady Tigers scored in the first inning to take the early lead but Arkansas responded with a third-inning run to pull even on the scoreboard. Wallace drew a one-out walk and stood on second after a ground out. She came around to score on a two-out single off the bat of Clarisa Navarro. The score remained tied until Jackson State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead and earn the doubleheader split.
