The 2014 Hogspy Awards
The night began with the 2014 Leaders of Distinction award, given to four seniors. These individuals embodied the spirit of the Razorback Leadership Academy, a program run through the Office of Student-Athlete Development to prepare our athletes for life after competition. This year’s honorees were  #GymBack Bailee Zumwalde, @RazorbackSwim's Aubrey Golbek, @RazorbackSoccer’s Jessie Givens and @RazorbackVB’s Raymariely Santos.

Bailee Zumwalde also took home the next award, the Heart of the Hog award. Zumwalde is a fixture at @RazorbackGYM meets, not only for her incredible talent but also for her spirit and heart. She spends any time she is not competing cheering on her teammates and supporting them throughout competition. Bailee is also a strong supporter of all @ArkRazorbacks athletics, a staple attendee all year round.

It was no surprise that Jessica Jackson took home the Female Rookie of the Year award after her debut season with @RazorbackWBB. Jackson was named to the Associated Press’ All-SEC Honorable Mention team, scoring 20 or more points seven times this year and with a career-best 31 points in a regular season win over Ole Miss. Jackson ranks seventh in the SEC and is the highest-ranking freshman in the league in scoring. She has had four double-doubles and was a three-time SEC Freshman of the Week selection, all culminating in All-SEC Second Team and All-SEC Freshman Team honors as voted on by league coaches.

Another stunning freshman record was turned in by Omar McLeod of @RazorbackTF, who took home the Male Rookie of the Year award. The NCAA 60-meter hurdle National Champion, McLeod was named SEC Freshman Runner of the Year, as well as All-SEC  Second Team and Freshman Team. Omar earned several SEC Freshman of the Week awards throughout the season and contributed to the Razorbacks’ third consecutive indoor conference title.

Success on the playing field isn’t the only thing that matters to Razorbacks, who are known for taking care of business off the field, too. Three student-athletes were honored for finishing with the top graduating GPA in this year’s class. Tera Bradham from @RazorbackSwim earned her undergraduate degree in three years while earning two varsity letters. Keri McClary of the women’s track team will be finishing her MBA during Summer 2014 and will be working for Nielsen after graduation. Rachel Carpino, also of the women’s track and field team, recently defended her senior thesis as a Chancellor’s Scholar and will graduate with honors.

This year’s Hog Tough award was given to the men’s basketball team for their sweep of Kentucky – two overtime victories in come-from-behind fashion. A put-back dunk by sophomore Michael Qualls with 0.2 seconds remaining captured the 87-85 victory in Bud Walton Arena, Arkansas’ first SEC victory of 2014. A back-and-forth contest in Rupp Arena was clinched by seven overtime points from senior Coty Clarke and two final free throws by senior Kikko Haydar, with the co-captains pushing Arkansas to a 71-67 victory. 2014 marked the first time the Hogs have swept Kentucky since 1994.

One of the most special and touching awards is the Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year, awarded this year to Jessica "Reggie" Harrison of @RazorbackSB. Harrison lost her father, Steve Harrison, to a sudden heart attack during her freshman season and has been a picture of grace and maturity through an unimaginable time. She has shown her teammates and the Razorback family how to be brave in the face of adversity and how to prevail through life’s curveballs. We are honored to call her a member of Razorback Nation and proud to see her accept this award.

The recipients of this year’s Brandon Burlsworth award are @RazorbackWGolf’s Emily Podzielinski and @RazorbackMBB’s Kikko Haydar. These student’s represent the benefits that come from working hard and serving those around you. Haydar summed it up beautifully saying, “Coach Anderson always tells us that when you work hard you get really lucky. I think both of us have gotten really lucky.”

In a year of incredible success, the Female Play of the Year award was given to @RazorbackTF’s Women’s Distance Mendly Relay. This special group of women won the program’s first DMR National title with a time of 11;09.83, the fifth fastest time in program history. Anchor leg Dominique Scott offered up these words on the experience, saying, “I wasn’t even able to watch my teammates, I was so nervous. When I came around the last bend and heard them screaming that we could win the championship I knew I had to run as fast as I could for them.”

The Male Play of the Year should come as no surprise to anyone, as it is up for GEICO’s Play of the Year. Sophomore Michael Qualls’s put-back dunk with .2 seconds on the shotclock to beat #12/13 Kentucky gave the Hogs their first overtime victory over the Wildcats of the season and found its was to both #1 on #SCTop10 as well as FoxSports1’s #The1 that night. That moment brought the entirety of Bud Walton Arena to its feet and sent Qualls straight to the @UATrough, celebrating one of the biggest moments of his young career with the Razorback students.

The Lee-Spencer Cup is awarded to the Razorback team that gives back the most to the community that houses and creates a yearly fanbase for our student-athletes. For their participation in Sweat Hawgs, Book Hogs, bagging food for local shelters and time at the local animal shelter, @RazorbackWTEN took home this year’s cup with Flavia Araujo leaving with the individual award.

Both Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients have clearly learned the art of time management, working to maintain their 4.0 GPAs with their hectic practice and competition schedules. @RazorbackTF’s Keri McClary took home the female award with Andrew Pieschko taking home the male, who will use his fifth year of eligibility to earn his masters of accounting. Pieschko was the first Razorback to win the Elite 89 award at this year’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at each of the NCAA’s 89 National Championship events.

This week just keeps getting better for this year’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. @RazorbackGYM’s Katherine Grable arrived back in Fayetteville today with the first two NCAA National Championships in #GymBack history in tow. She was also name the SEC Gymnast of the year and has earned multiple All-America awards during her time at the University of Arkansas. Sebastian Cappelen took home the Male Student-Athlete of the Year award. In 2013, Cappelen was the SEC Indvidual Champion and his 69-67-66/202 was good for SEC record low score for 59 holes with no bogeys. #SeaBass and @RazorbackMGolf will return to the same course this weekend for the SEC Championships, here’s to hoping lightening strikes twice for Cappelen.

Head Coach Colby Hale of @RazorbackSoccer was awarded the first Coach of the Year award after leading his team to its first SEC Tournament win in 18 years. The Razorbacks also made their first NCAA Tournament appearance advancing to  the Sweet Sixteen.

The men’s and women’s golf teams took home the Academic Team of the Year awards for their hard work on and off the fields. Both team’s had GPA averages of over 3.0, an incredible feat considering the time it takes to perfect their game and the travel to and from competition.

The final awards of the night were the Teams of the Year. Taking home the female Team of the Year award was @RazorbackSoccer, who started this fall on a 7-0 run, the first in program history, and entered the top 25 rankings for the first time. After recording their first SEC Tournament win in 18 years, the girl went on to compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time and advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. The Razorbacks will return 25 players from this year’s squad so don’t be surprised to see a similar run this fall!

It’s hard to win one championship, let alone three. This year’s Male Team of the Year was the men’s track and field team, coming off a 2013 Triple Crown with another SEC championship under their belt in 2014. Head coach Chris Bucknam was named the SEC Coach of the Year in 2014 indoor competition and the outdoor season is off to another incredible start for this year’s squad.
