FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former University of Arkansas women’s golfer, and current No. 1-ranked player in the world, Stacy Lewis, will be looking to defend her 2013 British Open title this week, as the 2014 RICOH Women’s British Open begins play on Thursday at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Lancashire.

Lewis is looking to become just the third player ever to win back-to-back British Opens, as she won last year’s major in St. Andrews by carding 69-72-69-72 for a 280 to finish 8-under par. It was a dramatic win for the Woodlands, Texas, native at last year’s British Open, as she went birdie-birdie on the course’s final two holes to give her a two-stroke lead over South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi and Hee Young Park to claim the second major victory of her career, and becoming the first American in 10 years to win the British Open.

The former Razorback has had quite the 2014 season so far, as she has captured three victories, with the most recent coming in the Natural State with her win at the 2014 Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship back on June 29, in Rogers, Ark. In that competition, Lewis overcame a shaky start, as she sat tied for 34th after the first day, but fired a 66-65 in the final two rounds for an overall score of 201 in the three-day event to claim the one-stroke victory.

The four-day British Open begins Thursday at Royal Birkdale, and concludes on Sunday afternoon. This will be the third time that the 72-hole course will host the event, and the first since the 2010 year when Taiwan’s Yani Tseng claimed the first of her back-to-back British Open titles.
