FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas softball team fell 6-0 to No. 4 Florida in the opening game of the series, moving its overall record to 18-10 and 2-7 in the Southeastern Conference. Florida moves to 27-2 overall and 8-1 in the SEC.
Florida struck first in the top of the third bringing in three runs. The Gators brought their first run in after Michelle Moultrie hit a double down the left field line bringing home Sami Fagan who was on first base. Lauren Haeger hit a homerun over the left-center field wall to give the Gators the 3-0 lead.
The Razorbacks threatened the Gators in the bottom of the third, loading the bases. Sophomores Jayme Gee and Chloe Oprzedek both recorded a single in the inning while Devon Wallace was granted base off of a walk. With two outs in the inning the Razorbacks struck out swinging and could not bring a runner home.
The Gators grabbed their second homerun of the game in the top of the fourth when Ensley Gammel hit the ball over the left field wall.
Florida loaded the bases in the top of the fifth bringing in one run and giving it the 5-0 lead. One more run was scored in the sixth to give the Gators the 6-0 lead.
Chelsea Cohen faced the minimum amount of batters in the first, second and seventh innings, with some stellar defensive work from Sierra Bronkey who snagged a hard line drive in the top of the seventh.
The Razorbacks were unable to grab a hit in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Gators the 6-0 victory.
"I just told the team, tomorrow is a new day," said head coach Mike Larabee "We need to come out ready to play."
Arkansas faces Florida tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Bogle Park in the second game of the series.
