FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team continued its tradition of achievement in the classroom during the 2011 spring, reaching team Scholar All-American status and having ten individual Academic All-Americans, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America announced.
The Scholar All-American status is awarded to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Razorbacks turned in a 3.43 GPA, which ranked 25th in the nation.
"I am extremely proud of our team's academic performance this year," head coach Jeff Poppell said. "This marks the fourth consecutive year that our team has been ranked in the top 25 nationally for our team's GPA."
The 3.43 GPA was the second highest mark in the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas ranked in the top ten in GPA in each of the three previous years, with its average consistently hovering around that 3.5 mark.
A number of individual accolades accompanied the Razorback team award. Most notably, senior Jamie Marks and sophomore Chelsea Franklin earned top honors as CSCAA Academic All-Americans.
Senior Ashley Largo, senior Erin Neumann, senior Erica Totten, sophomore Sigrun Sverrisdottir, sophomore Haley Smith, freshman Liz Braun, freshman Julia Kucherich, and freshman Carly Mercer each also garnered Honorable Mention Academic All-American status.
"The ten individual Academic All America honors represent the most in our program's history," Poppell said. "Our girls do an outstanding job in the classroom, and it is always nice to see them recognized for their efforts."
Ball State University led the nation in team GPA at 3.6, while the University of Evansville, Tulane University, and Clemson University tied for second place with a 3.59. South Carolina was the only SEC school ranked above the Razorbacks, coming in ninth with a 3.52 GPA.
In other academic highlights from the 2010-2011 swimming and diving season, sixteen athletes were named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll, seven freshmen were named to the SEC First Year Honor Roll, and senior art student Gina Bargiachi had her photography published in the June publication of Best of College Photography 2011.
