FAYETTEVILLE – All-American’s Amy Borsellino, Katherine Grable, Bailee Zumwalde, Kelci Lewis, junior Shelby Salmon and freshmen Erin Freier and Heather Elswick each picked up record marks for the No. 22 University of Arkansas gymnastics team in a loss to the No. 1 Florida Gators in Barnhill Arena Friday, 197.575-196.175.
Grable scored a season high on the vault with a 9.900 to start the Razorbacks off with collecting season high marks. Borsellino stuck her bars landing for a 9.85 and a career high for the event. Salmon and Freier would each score a 9.875 to collect their season high scores.
In the final rotation of the night for the Razorbacks (1-3, 0-3 SEC), Zumwalde, Elswick, Dillard and Lewis each collected season highs with 9.85 on the floor. Borsellino would match her career high of 9.90 and Grable would match her career high of 9.95 to lead the Razorbacks to a 49.400 for the event to beat Florida (4-1, 3-1 SEC) on the floor 49.400-49.275.
The Razorbacks would also pick up season high scores for the vault rotation with a 49.150, the bars rotation with a 49.250 and finished off the meet with the 49.400 on the floor.
“It was important for us to finish strong on the floor,” co-head coach Mark Cook said. “We had some errors on the floor in the last couple of meets, but to come back and finish strong after we had some difficulties on beam was huge for us. It was a great confidence builder.”
On the vault, Arkansas recorded season highs for the rotation (49.15) and for Grable with a 9.90. The Razorbacks also collected a 9.825’s from senior Kelci Lewis and Elswick, followed by 9.80’s from Borsellino and Zumwalde.
Florida scored a 49.450 on the bars in rotation one to lead the Razorbacks, after a 9.95 from Mackenzie Caquatto.
In rotation two, the high marks continued to come the Razorbacks way. Salmon and Freier each posted season highs of 9.875 on the bars, followed by a career high for Borsellino of 9.85. Grable added a 9.85 and junior Jordan Salsberg scored a 9.80 to give the Razorbacks their second season high total in two events of 49.250 on the bars.
Florida maintained the lead however, 98.850-98.400, led by Ashanee Dickerson on the vault with a meet high 9.95.
On the beam, Arkansas posted a 48.350 led by freshman Sydnie Dillard with a 9.85. Freier added a 9.80, followed by Grable with a 9.775 and Borsellino a 9.70. The Razorbacks counted a fall to round out the event and give Florida more padding on its lead.
Florida added a 49.275 on the floor to maintain its lead after three rotations at 148.125-146.775.
“Our routines were good tonight,” co-head coach Cook said. “Florida has a roster that is loaded with Olympians, but we felt like we had a good shot to come out to day and pick up the upset. Overall though it was a great score for us and we will look to build on this as the season goes on.”
The Razorbacks return to competition next Friday, Feb. 8 at Auburn.
