– The University of Arkansas volleyball team lost to Missouri in four sets (18-25, 25-20, 14-25, 20-25) Wednesday night at Barnhill Arena. The Razorbacks were paced by a pair of double-double performances from junior Meredith Hays
and senior Raymariely Santos
. Wednesday’s match was played in front of 1,672 fans, the second-largest home crowd in program history. Arkansas is now 9-5 overall with a 2-1 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
Hays led the team with 19 kills and tied for the team lead with 14 digs to complete her fourth double-double of the season, and second of the conference season. The Hereford, Texas, native added three total blocks and a service ace against the Tigers. Santos registered her team-leading fifth double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs to go along with five kills and two total blocks.
Defensively, senior libero Emily Helm
finished the match with 14 digs while sophomore Summer Morgan
led all players with six total blocks, including two solo blocks in the middle. Arkansas finished the night with 10 total blocks, its seventh match of the season with double-digit blocks.
After dropping the opener, the Razorbacks won the first three points of the second set and never trailed in the game. Arkansas used a six-point surge in the middle of the set to turn a two-point edge into a 17-9 after Morgan got up for a solo stuff. On the team’s third opportunity to close out the set, sophomore Liz Fortado
found the floor to even the match at one set apiece. She had a season-high nine kills Wednesday.
Missouri (17-0/2-0 SEC) took the third set but Arkansas responded by jumping out to a 10-7 lead in game four. Hays had five kills during the stretch of points and finished the set with eight. The set was tied at 17-all before the visitors put distance between themselves and the Razorbacks. Mizzou won the final three points of the match to secure the win.
The Razorbacks resume conference play Friday with a road match at South Carolina. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT) at the Volleyball Competition Facility in Columbia. Arkansas’ next home match is set for Oct. 6, a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Auburn.
